Overview:
Ko ‘Olina Lagoons are a true island paradise whose oceanfront location was once the private playground for Hawaiian Royalty. Though much time has passed, this great getaway still holds the allure of a place to relax and play in the protected lagoons. Only a short distance west of Waikiki, you will find this location much more relaxing with plenty of shade and grassy areas.
After you have explored a little and found the perfect spot to set up your day camp, though you don’t really need much as the lagoons have a backdrop of a path and several locations close by to quench your thirst or grab a bite to eat, you’ll be all set to gear up head into the cool refreshing waters.
The lagoons are one of the few man-made beaches in Hawaii and by far the most impressive. There are a total of four lagoons. Each specially made in a similar way . They have three cuts made into the rock that allows sea water to flow in. Most of the time the current flows in the sides, and exits the middle. The lagoons have a protective rope in front of the middle area, and you are not supposed to go beyond it because of the outgoing current.
As you submerge yourself into a safe and tranquil underwater reality, you may notice the water is not quite as clear as some of the other popular snorkeling destinations, but still, a wonderful display of tropical sea life can be seen with each lagoon hosting something different. Lagoon 1 is the farthest west and is the least favorable for snorkeling. Lagoons 3 and 4 provide an excellent opportunity to see sea turtles. Lagoons 1 and 3 are the most crowded but even they remain a far cry from Waikiki. If snorkeling is not your thing, you can still find plenty of enjoyment in a safe swim or a picture perfect place to float around the water soaking up some magnificent Hawaiian sun.
It is easy to see why the ancient Hawaiians used these very shores to relax and play as you lie in the soft grass under the shade of a beautiful tree. You are sure you have just stepped into the post card you sent back home yesterday making the difficult parking well worth it. Yes, parking is a challenge here. Getting to the lagoons very early or after 4 pm is a way to avoid the whole scene. The security station will let you know what is available and provide you with a free day pass.
Once you have discovered the lagoons, you will make it a point to return. Each time you will discover something new, create another lasting memory and leave refreshed, content and ready for some more fun.
